Many Old Wagon Ruts from before 1870

Located on the Gene & Candy Schmits Land.

Can be see from Hwy 63 just off Snake road.

The picture below was taken in the late evening when the shadows were long and helped one see the trails. Most of these trails are difficult to recognize because of the long grass at this time of the year. Below are the  trails, there being a right and left side of the trail.  This would be the trail that led in and out of town and up to the top of the hill and they do take the way of least rise per foot.

This farm has never been plowed and this prevented erosion from destroying the wagon trails as on most of the  country. Below is Gene Schmits  holding a yard stick as we measure the depth of one of the wagon trails. These old trail ruts measured from a few inches to over two feet in depth.  They curve around the hill so as to make it easier for the draft animals  to both pull the loads up the hills and also hold the load back on coming down the hill. There were some places on the trail where they would stick a post thought the back wheels of the wagon when going to prevent the loaded wagons from over-running the draft stock..
