.Nemaha County and the Early  1800 Trails

,Many Old Wagon Ruts from before 1870

Located on the Gene & Candy Schmits Land.

Can be see from Hwy 63 just off Snake road.

These old wagon ruts are just east of Seneca, near where Snake Road joins Hwy 63. This ground is rough and with some rocks and  has never been broken. The trails follow the draws up the hill, as this is the least rise per  foot.  The picture below is to the south of the hill and just north of the trees along the creek. These wagon trails appear as two terraces along the side of the creek. The picture below was taken in the late evening when the shadows were long and helped one see the trails. Most of these trails are difficult to recognize because of the long grass. Below is two photo of the same area, one looking to the northwest and one to the southwest. These  trail that led in and out of town and up to the top of the ridge and also to near Maxwell Springs. Before 1859 these trails down the hill did not exist. Before that the trail led to Richmond and was on top of the ridge. This was the  Military Road which led from Leavenworth to Fort Kearney, NE. John Smith

The same location below looking down the hill. Highway 36 is in the background, and they were trails that were  used from 1859 to about 1870 when the railroad came to Seneca.  and perhaps some time later until the land was fenced

See the same location looking to the right or south from a bit higher on the hill.

See trails from the top of hill on Tom Kramer's Home Development.

See these trails as they appeared from a Satellite  photo in 2002 .

See early maps of the trails before Seneca existed in 1857.

See all the trails on this farm  highlighted with  red pen.
