The Seneca Florist
and Greenhouse was established in 1881, south of the present day
shop, across the railroad tracks, by Harry Brown. In 1902 it
was relocated to 710 Main. The original shop was damaged by the
tornado of 1896. After Mr. Brown's died in 1906 his wife took over
operation. She later married O. R. Young and with his sister
Cora Young, ran the shop until 1924. when it was purchased by Sybil Eberely who ran it until 1950. Anita and Clinton Eberely
continued the business until July 1, 1961. At this time Carl and
Marjorie Songer purchased the firm. Their son Sylvan took over in
January 1922. Tom and Lex Luckeroth purchased the business in
July of 1993. Seneca Florist has operated continuously for 119
years under only seven proprietors.
The business has
undergone many changes in the past 119 years. Mr. Brown grew most
of the cut flower and plants in his greenhouse. We now get shipments of
fresh Flowers in daily from all over the world. We still grow some of
our own cut flowers such as mums and snapdragons. We also grow all our
own geraniums and bedding plants for spring planting. If you have
never been in our greenhouse it is a wonderful place to come to in early
spring when the weather is still cold outside. It is warm and earthy in
there You can almost watch the seedlings grow. There is as least part
of Mr. Brown and Co. in the green house as we have several large cacti
that are at least 80 years old or older.
We also carry a
nice selection of silk arrangements, wreaths and swags, gift items,
balloons, plush animals and lots of plants.
