Sixty Years and four generations in the
lumbering business are represented in this group. J. P. Koelzer,
(left) started in 1890s. Next comes his son, U E. Koelzer, who
became head man in 1945. At his right is the grandson, Tom,
assistant manager of the Koelzer yard at Seneca Kansas: and up in
the air is his great grandson Jimmy -- the fourth generation and a
very promising tyke who will soon be doing his share..
Today in 2004 Jim has his he feet firmly on the
ground and is now and is president of
Koelzer Lumber Co. which has been in business at the same location at Sixth and
Main for over 100 years.

The History of Koelzer Lumber Co.
The first
Koelzer Lumber Company was originally started in Baileyville. J. P.
Koelzer was the owner, and opened up business in the first part of 1897.
After approximately at year and a half, J. P. moved to Seneca leaving
the old business behind. He then went to work for the Holton Lumber
Company in Seneca. He remained employed there until November
13, 19O5, at which time J. P. and his father-in-law, Matt Schneider
bought the Holton Lumber yard and was renamed the Koelzer Lumber
Yard.
In 1946 the lumber yard changed hands and was
owned by Urban Koelzer, son of J. P. Koelzer and Elizabeth
(Schneider) Koelzer. On November 10, 1951 Urban passed away and his wife
Georgina and their son Tom Koelzer ran the yard. Tom Koelzer
purchased his mother half of the business in November of 1974.
Tom's son Jim came back from the Air Force in April of
1974 and started working in the yard. Tom passed away in 1988 and was
taken over by Jim and his mother Virginia. Virginia after many
years retired in the summer of 2000.
Currently Jim is the owner and operator of the Koelzer
Lumber Yard and Cement plant. at 532 Main, Seneca Kansas, 66538 |

Mix Plant Jim has a passion for cars.
For a number of
years he has been involved with The Seneca Car
Show
which has become a great success.
