Lake Nemaha was a CCC project during the depression years under the Roosevelt Reconstruction Plan in the 1930  and 1940s .It is located south of Seneca, Kansas some six miles on the Nemaha River and Highway 63 crosses the dam.

As you can see this land has few trees as it was farm ground before the lake, and many opposed giving up their ground. This was a good spot to come to in the late thirties and forties for fishing and boating or swimming . This picture could have been take on a cool day in the spring. Click on the picture to see what happened on a warm day in July. This area you are looking at is now covered with trees to the point you would not recognize it as ever being a place of swimming or boating. Click Here and see the floating dock

Lake was constructed before much of the land was terraced or any conservation practices were used in this area. The land above the dam is a deep soil left by the glacial age and subjected to  erosion which filled the streams and eventually Lake Nemaha with silt. Today with all soil conservation the this would not have happened as soon however eventually it would have silted to the point it is today. The lake was used for fishing and recreation for a number of years, however eventually it silted up in the point it was given up as a lost cause. The people above the dam with their creeks filled with silt were glade to see it go as they could reclaim their land.
