| This is a very early picture of the Gilford Hotel as
there seems to be no telephone poles, light poles or houses on either
side. Would seem to be of a date before 1900. The Gilford Hotel was built in 1892, located on the corner of Third and Main where the Community National Bank is today (2004). From the 1938 anniversary edition of the Courier Tribune comes the following information. "The Hotel Gilford was another of the imposing Seneca Buildings erected by Charles G. Scrafford . Associated with Mr. Scrafford was John Gilchist, with "Gilford" a combination formed from the names of the promoters." When this hotel was demolished a part of the past that had was special went also. For those who would like to have see it preserved it was a event that will never be forgotten. There were many who felt sad that this this hotel had to be demolished at the time. Through the depression and the war years it had went down hill to the point it would have been very expensive to repair. |
