With the mouse over the picture you see an enlargement of part of the photo with the Royal Theater. This may have been only an out door theater which was used only in the summer as some information leads one to believe. This is the same flood as previous the picture, with pictures taken from nearly the same spot looking west on Main Street. The building with the A. L. L S ------ Hardware sign was the Scoville Hardware Building The building west of that building is Citizens State bank where C. C. K. Scoville was president. A. L. L. Scoville and A. A. L Scoville were brothers. This information comes with another picture on this web page and the 1994 Citizens State Bank Centennial booklet has to that effect. There seemed to be custom for many of the people of this time to go by their initials and some by their second name. The initials here on the building are those of A. L. L. Scoville. In one advertisement it stated where A. L. L. Scoville had his merchandise in three different building in the City of Seneca. This building now owned by Mrs. Roger Holthaus. The Royal Picture Theater in 1915 was in the 500 block of Main on the north side of the street, second building from the Fifth, and Main intersection. In July 1985 the Courier Tribune mentions the fact that an outdoor theater was in this location at this time and was referred to as "The Royal Outdoor Air Dome Picture Theater. Some pictures of this time show a small building which appears here on the right of the picture. This occupied the space that was empty for a time. There was a Putt Putt golf game here for a time in the 1940s. Then Farrell's Grocery which later was the Centralia Bank and now J Six Farms. J C Penney's had a store in this space also after the mid 1950s which is now is Fashions Unlimited. Dates I do not have at this time. If you have other information or dates on any of this time please share them with me. Click here to see an enlarged picture of Theater entrance and add for this movie. Editors note: The reason for George Williams owning this property after Samuel Lappin is likely for the follow reason: When Samuel Lappin was charged and arrested in the "School Bond Scandal" in 1876 or about this time> He was in the Topeka jail and broke out of jail and skipped the country and went to South America. George W. Williams and other had put up bond for him before and after this all Samuel Lappin's property was confiscated and sold. George Williams was married to Samuel's sister and had went his bond. He likely bought this property to pay off the bond. (The preceding is from some past study and some speculation) This picture is dated as June 17, 1915. The building up the street with the ventilating tower is the Seneca Fire Station. The new City hall was started in 1916 and the brick streets in 1919. Bits and pieces of the time puzzle are coming together. Do you have pictures with dates to help the puzzle? Let me know about them. E-mail me |
